In 1971 the New York Post wrote a true story about a man who lived in a small town in White Oak, Georgia, USA.
This man married a beautiful woman and well, unfortunately he never appreciated her. He did not become a good husband and father. He often came home at night drunk and beat up children and wife.
One night he decided to try his fortune to the big city, New York. He stole money saving his wife, then he took the bus headed north, to the big city, into a new life. Together with some friends he started a new business. For a while he enjoys his life. Sex, gambling, drug. He enjoyed it all.
Months went by. Years went by. His business failed, and he began to lack of money. Then he began to engage in criminal acts. He wrote a fake check and use it to defraud people of money. Finally, one fateful moment, he was caught. The police put him in jail, and the court sentenced him to three years in prison.
Toward the end of his prison, he began to miss home. He missed his wife. He missed his family. Finally he decided to write a letter to his wife, to tell her how sorry he was. That he still loves his wife and children.
She hopes she can still come back. But he also understands that it may now be too late, so he ended his letter by writing:
Unfortunately, you do not need to wait for me ...
But if you still have feelings to me, will you reveal? If you still want me to come back to you, tie a yellow ribbon for me, the only one tree in the center of town. When I passed and did not find a piece of yellow ribbon, it's okay. I will know and understand. I will not get off the bus, and will continue to Miami. And I promise I will never again disturb you and the kids in my life.
Finally the day of release comes. He was very agitated. He did not receive a letter from his wife. He did not know if his wife receives a letter or even if he read the letter, if she would forgive him?
He took the bus to Miami, Florida, who passed his home, White Oak. He was very very nervous. The whole bus to hear the story, and they asked the bus driver, "Please, right through White Oak, go slowly. We must see what happens."
His heart was pounding as the bus approached the center of White Oak. He did not dare raise her head. Cold sweat profusely. Finally he saw the tree.
Tears in his eyes. He did not see a yellow ribbon.
There is no yellow ribbon. Not a blade. But there are a hundred strands of yellow ribbons hanging from the banyan tree.
The whole tree was covered with yellow ribbons.
This true story of a song hits number one in 1973 in America. The driver immediately called the newspaper and tell this story. A song writer wrote this story into song, "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Old Oak Tree", and when this album-release in February 1973, immediately became hits in the month of April 1973. A sweet song, but it may still be much sweeter if we could do what the song inscribed.
